In 2009, while working as a teaching artist, Lamar noticed the glaring difference in resources available to underfunded neighborhoods. At the time, he was teaching ballroom dance and chess to youth in schools outside of Chicago. Lamar, a product of Chicago Public Schools, saw a need to help redistribute resources to these neighborhoods. He partnered with Ted and Malgorzata to create Twist and Shout School of the Performing Arts. Together they will mentor, train, and inspire youth and adults to work with youth. Twist and Shout will promote grit, curiosity, self-control, social intelligence, zest optimism, gratitude, and personal empowerment for young people of all communities, especially those in need.
